Had been invited by an artist friend to stop in for a visit while in their neighborhood. Turned out that the invitation was not just for coffee and a chat—it was a surprise invitation to paint with them in their fabulous studio filled with north light and every supply needed to work on an oil painting. Decided to work monochromatically, so found this empty vase and set it up on a grey cloth against a light background and adjusted the placement for the light and shadows. Once it was the still life arrangement was set, entered into the practice of seeing without naming objects and worked to paint shapes of grey.
Letting go of naming ‘objects’ and becoming aware of the various gradations of lights, darks, and edges, often leads to a reawakened state of wonder and the magic of experiencing awe. It is possible to find awe in any setting.
